Absent Certainty

The universe fell grey with sadness

at a world so nearly lost.

Refusing defeat,

she painted the sky with uncertainty

and forced them all to sit still.

At first, oh they were so angry.

They did not like being told what to do.

But the anger soon subsided

and their quiet loneliness

reminded them…

They were alive.

They had hands to lend

Meals to share

Songs to sing

Laughter to give

The universe finally smiled,

for her world was never really lost,

merely in a trance.

Ripping the known away,

their fear jolted them

to remember.

Like the aspen grove

held together by roots,

they too are connected

and never truly stand alone.
